February is the month of love and Valentine’s Day is fast approaching. We talked about how Onstar can make your Valentine’s Day planning a snap, so now we are going to talk about some things that we love here at Lake Country Chevrolet Cadillac. Chevy Silverado has something for everyone!

There is no way I could outline everything that is offered in the Silverado lineup because it is plentiful! So consider this a general overview of the Silverado 1500 lineup, with everything there is to offer via trim packages.

The roster ascends through base Work and LS, volume LT, and top-end LTZ.  So what are the differences in trim packages?

The Work is just that: a work truck. It’s pretty bare bones, but it does come standard with air conditioning, cruise control, and a tilt steering wheel.

The LS gets cloth seats instead of the standard vinyl in work trucks, power windows/locks/mirrors, satellite radio, and GM’s OnStar Assistance.

LT options generally have the same equipment, but you can get more luxury and convenience options than on the LS. Think comfort, look, and feel of more luxury.

LTZ has leather upholstery, heated front seats, driver-seat memory, dual-zone automatic climate control, power-folding outside mirrors, remote engine start, and Bluetooth wireless cell-phone link.

Some of the many, many options you can buy, depending on trim level, include more-powerful engines, a power sunroof, rear-obstacle detection, power-adjustable pedals, navigation system, rear view camera, cooled front seats, rear DVD entertainment, and wheels up to 22 inches in diameter.

The Silverado is a heavy hauler.

Most Work models come with a 195-horsepower 4.3-liter V6 engine. Standard on the LS and some LTs is a 302-horsepower 4.8-liter V8. These engines pair with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

Standard on the LTZ and some LS Silverados and optional on others is a 315-horsepower 5.3-liter V8. The LT and LTZ can be ordered with the 403-horsepower 6.2-liter V8 borrowed from the premium Cadillac Escalade. These two engines use a 6-speed automatic transmission.

All the V8 engines can use gasoline and/or E85 ethanol-blended fuel. The 5.3-liter engine include GM’s Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation.

Maximum towing capacity is 10,700 pounds on the 1500.

The Silverado 2500 and 3500 can increase your tow and load capacity significantly.

The 2500 can tow 17,800 pounds and the 3500 can tow up to 23,100 pounds. That is some major towing power!!

Fantastic Fuel Economy for Large Trucks

EPA estimated fuel economy for rear-wheel-drive Silverados ranges from 13 mpg city to 22 mpg highway. 4WD models score between 12 and 21 mpg. These estimates are for gasoline. With E85, those scores drop to between 9 and 16 mpg. For this truck class that is fantastic fuel economy.

The Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid gives drivers more for their money when it comes to fuel efficiency.  It gets 33 percent more mileage per tank of gas over non-hybrid models while still offering the roominess and capability customers look for in a full-size SUV.  With seating for up to eight people and a towing capacity of up to 6,200 pounds on 2WD models, the Tahoe Hybrid is a strong bet.

The Tahoe Hybrid features GM’s advanced Electrically Variable Transmission (EVT) and 300-volt nickel-metal hydride Energy Storage System (ESS).  They work together with the standard 6.0L V-8 gasoline engine with Active Fuel Management (AFM) and late intake valve closing (LIVC) technology to enable the Tahoe Hybrid’s efficient performance.  This system allows the Tahoe to launch and drive up to 30 mph on electricity alone while also allowing the gas engine to operate in its economical V-4 mode for longer periods.

The EVT is designed to give the Tahoe the best combination of city and highway fuel economy.  It is an all-purpose system that is well-suited to providing excellent economy and full-size SUV passenger-carrying, cargo-hauling, and trailer-towing capabilities.

One of the main reasons for the Tahoe Hybrid’s fuel efficiency is the gasoline engine’s Auto Stop mode.  When the Tahoe is cruising between 0 and 30 mph, the gas engine may be automatically shut down.  Leaving the engine off and allowing the vehicle to operate under only electric power up to 30 mph greatly reduces fuel consumption.

The regenerative braking system works together with the hydraulic braking system.  It uses a brake pedal emulator that provides progressive resistance as the pedal is depressed.  This gives the brake pedal a feel that is much like that of a standard hydraulic braking system.

Inside the Tahoe Hybrid is a gauge cluster that includes a special tachometer that incorporates an Auto Stop position just above the 0 rpm mark that shows drivers when the gasoline engine is in shut down mode.  An analog economy gauge helps the driver maintain the most efficient style of driving.

In the middle of the center stack, the standard navigation system’s 6.5-inch full-color VGA display doubles as a monitor that shows a graphic representation of the hybrid drivetrain’s power flow.  It informs the occupants how the system is sending power to the wheels from the ESS/electric motors, the gasoline engine, or both.  The screen also shows reverse electrical flow during regenerative braking.

The 2013 Chevrolet Spark mini car is saving owners time and money when it comes to regularly scheduled maintenance.  With minimal required scheduled maintenance, young, reluctant car buyers can rest assured that the Spark is a solid investment that will require little more expense than the monthly payment.

Designed for next-generation urbanites, engineers took into account that people in this demographic are more likely than previous generations to delay major life events, like buying their first new car, because of uncertainty over the overall cost of vehicle ownership.  According to research by Chevrolet and MTV Scratch, more than one in four of next-generation customers said owning a vehicle that is easier and less expensive to maintain is very important.

With its $12,995 starting price, the Spark is more than $3,100 less than its nearest competitor.  It is saving owners money right off the bat.  The savings don’t end there, though.  For example, Chevrolet engineers designed the Spark’s engine timing chain to require no scheduled maintenance (unlike timing belts) and electronic power steering and transmission fluid are intended to last the life of the vehicle.  Spark owners can also go up to 100,000 miles before replacing spark plugs.

Over the last 95 years, Chevrolet trucks have built a legacy. It started with the idea to take a few car chassis and fit them with hand-built beds to help carry materials around a booming car factory. Soon after, millions of Chevrolet trucks were on the road tackling the toughest jobs on farms, hauling tools and lumber, and carrying families and friends into the wilds. Chevrolet has a rich truck history. Here are a few of the Chevy truck highlights from the last 95 years.

1918 Chevy Four-Ninety Half-Ton Light Delivery “Cowl Chassis”

The first customer chassis was built in Flint, Michigan, on November 22, 1916, and was shipped from the factory on December 2 that year. Two four-cylinder models were Chevrolet’s official entry into the truck market for the 1918 model year. They were cowl chassis units that came from the factory with only frontal sheet metal. Usually, buyers would obtain a wooden cab and cargo box or panel van body to suit their purposes. It was priced at $595 and was essentially a bodyless Chevrolet Four Ninety car with stronger rear springs. When a pickup box or panel body was added, it was an agile and economical light-delivery truck for the post WWI businesses.

1930 Chevrolet Pickup

In the 1930s factory-built pickups replaced the simple cowl chassis models. They came with roadster and closed bodies. Chevy bought the Martin-Parry body company in 1930 and soon started selling steel-body half-ton pickups complete with a factory-installed bed.

These new pickups featured a new Chevy inline six-cylinder engine, which was first produced in later 1928. The inline six-cylinder engines were used in Chevy cars and trucks for years following.

1947 Chevrolet Advance-Design Half-Ton Pickup

Chevy introduced its Advance-Design trucks in early 1947. They were the first completely redesigned GM vehicles to appear following WWII. Truck owners were asking for more room, more comfort, improved visibility, and a wider pickup box. Chevy responded with the Advance-Design trucks, which gave them all of that and more.

1959 Chevrolet El Camino

The original El Camino was introduced in 1959 and featured the finned style that was popular in that time coupled with half-ton pickup utility. After 1960, though, the El Camino went on a three-year hiatus. It was revived in 1964 with a new version based on the mid-size Chevrolet Chevelle. El Camino buyers could order their truck with a high-performance big-block V-8 powertrain and by 1968, a complete Super Sport package was available.

1982 Chevrolet S-10

The Chevy S-10 was the first domestically produced compact pickup. With an 82-horsepower four-cylinder engine and available 110-horsepower V6, the S-10 could haul 1,500 pounds and tow 4,000. It also featured a roomy cab with high levels of standard and optional equipment making it the mainstay of the Chevy lineup.

1999 Chevrolet Silverado

Chevy’s all-new 1999 full-size pickups were the first to be called Silverados. The trucks resulted from the most intense development program ever undertaken by GM. The interior of the Silverado had comfort and convenience features personal-use customers expected. The new generation of V8 engines gave the Silverado plenty of power. In 2004, Silverado became available in a crew cab model to accommodate families and in 2007 it got significant improvements in performance and fuel economy.

Keeping up with your vehicle’s maintenance can be tough.  When did you last get the oil changed?  When does your car need to have the radiator flushed.  Making a checklist of regular maintenance tasks can help you to streamline your vehicle’s upkeep and help to preserve the resell value.

There are several options when it comes to making a car maintenance checklist.  Whichever approach you take, make sure your list is simple to follow, easy to update, and that it will actually be helpful to you.  Most car owners use a booklet that fits in the glove box.  However, technology provides several other options that include PDAs, mobile phones, laptops, or OnStar.  Choose the method that works best for you.

Be sure to divide your checklist into four timetable categories: monthly, quarterly, twice yearly, and as needed.  The “as needed” category is important to track every maintenance activity, even the unforeseen ones.

Here are some ideas for what to include on your checklist:

Monthly

• Check the oil level
• Check the hoses and belts.  Replace worn or frayed belts
• Check tire pressure and compare to the tire pressure chart provided in your owner’s manual  Add air as needed.
• Check  the coolant.  Make sure the engine is cool and add coolant if it’s slow.

Quarterly or 3,500 miles

• Change oil and replace oil filter (check your owner’s manual for specific recommendations for your car, truck or SUV).
• Look at the battery terminals and cables and check for corrosion.  Clean if needed
• Check windshield washer fluid and add if needed.
• Check brake fluid, power steering fluid, and transmission fluid.
• Using a coolant gauge, check the integrity of the coolant based on seasonal recommendations.
• Remove and check air filter and replace if dirty.  Make sure dirt doesn’t fall into the intake when removing the old filter.

Biannually (every six months) or 7,000 Miles

• Check wiper blades and replace if needed.
• Ensure headlights, brake lights, horn, and signals work.
• Check brakes for wear.
• Inspect the spare tire to make sure it’s inflated.
• Examine exhaust system looking for damage, rust, or loose parts.
• Check shock absorbers for wear and oil seepage.

Keeping a car maintenance log can help to keep you organized and on top of required maintenance.  This, in turn, can help to improve the resale value of your vehicle.  If you have a maintenance log, the buyer knows what they’re getting into and may be willing to pay a good deal more since they know exactly what kind of shape the car is in.

We’ve already talked about how checking your tires is important when winter weather is imminent.  There are, however, some other things to consider before Jack Frost settles in for the winter months.  Assuming that you’ve covered the basics, like having and ice scraper handy, and that your vehicle is up-to-date on routine scheduled maintenance, there are some things that can help you through winter challenges.

• Clear out the leaves.  Leaves, twigs, and other organic matter can build up and cause problems in areas of your car where water is supposed to flow.  If these areas are clogged with leaves, it can cause leaks or corrosion.  The air plenum near the windshield is perhaps the most likely area for this to happen.

• Check wiper blades.  Winter precipitation can be icy and slushy.  Make sure you have a good set of wiper blades on your vehicle.  Generally, wiper blades should be replaced every year.  If your car doesn’t have the newer “beam blade” style wipers, consider getting a pair, especially for winter.  The beam style blades don’t have an external spring that can freeze up.

When snow or freezing precipitation is forecasted, be sure to turn the wipers off when you par so that when you restart your car, the wiper’s motor is not working to get frozen wipers going.  This can burn out the motor.  Some people like to pop the wipers up so they’re not touching the windshield.  This makes it easier to scrape ice or snow off of your windshield.

• Make sure your battery is charged.  Cold weather puts more strain on a car’s battery, especially if the car is parked outside. Checking your battery and charging system now will help you to avoid being stranded in the cold later on.  If you find that your car’s needs a new battery, you can quickly get a new one from an auto parts store and install it yourself or contact your service department and let a qualified service tech install a new one for you.

• Check the antifreeze.  You have probably seen “flush and fill” promotions at repair shops around town.  Chances are your engine coolant is fine for the winter ahead as long as you’ve followed your car’s service schedule regularly.  Most newer cars have been fitted with coolants that can last as long as five years or 150,000 miles.  Check your owner’s manual to see what is recommended for you car.

• Have a survival kit.  It is important to be prepared in case you do get stranded during winter weather.  A space blanket for each person in your family tucked into the glove compartment or some other storage space within reach of the driver can be a lifesaver when temperatures dip below zero.  Other things to consider adding are a whistle, a plastic bag for gathering snow for water, plumber’s candle and matches for melting snow, a radio, a flashlight with extra batteries, non-perishable snacks like granola bars, raisins, nuts, or dehydrated fruit; something to read to keep you awake, toilet tissue, and a folding cup.

• Clean your vehicle’s headlights.  In winter’s gloom, it is important to squeeze every lumen you can out of your car’s headlamps.  Make sure they are free from dirt and then rub car wax on them, let it dry, and buff off.  Repeat the process.  The slippery surface left behind will be less likely to build up an icy coating when road slush refreezes on your car and, if it does, it will make it easier to clear off.
